Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the need for advanced artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Malaysia to foster local talent and spearhead AI innovations. In a notable meeting with Nvidia Corp CEO Jensen Huang and YTL Power International Bhd Managing Director Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong, Anwar highlighted the country’s ambitions to break into the top 20 nations in AI. According to Anwar’s X post, Nvidia has committed to supporting Malaysia’s AI aspirations by aiding in the establishment of excellence centers for AI education and research, and by collaborating to create Malaysia’s own AI Cloud system.
This partnership is set to unfold through a strategic collaboration between Nvidia and Malaysian conglomerate YTL, aiming to construct an AI data center with an investment totaling RM20 billion. YTL has already begun investing in the cutting-edge H100 supercomputer, laying the groundwork for an AI cloud-based system within the country.
Anwar pointed out that Nvidia’s investment underscores the continued attraction of Malaysia as a key investment location for global tech giants. The meeting concluded on a light note with Huang referring to Anwar as the “AI Prime Minister”, highlighting the friendly and optimistic atmosphere of the discussion.
